What is ‘Hearing Impairment’?

When sound reaches the ear, it is transmitted to the brain along the auditory nerve through the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear.

If either one of this path has a problem, this leads to hearing loss and when hard to hear a sound due to the hearing loss, it is called ‘Hearing Impairment’.

The causes of hearing impairment are divided into three : the problem of path that transmits sound  (conductive hearing loss), the problem that senses the sound (sensorineural hearing loss), and when both problems exist (mixed hearing loss).

Inflammation of the middle ear is a typical disease of conductive hearing loss and presbycusis is a representative disease of sensorineural hearing loss.
